The inimitable recipe has always remained unchanged and jealously handed down throughout history. Fruit of Gaspare’s experimentation
Campari
, it is still produced with the same ingredients, thanks to a formula that still remains secret and known to very few people.A liqueur that becomes an aperitif, this is the secret of its success.
Campari is an alcoholic bitter, made by the infusion in alcohol and water, of herbs, plants, fruits: only these are the elements made known of its special recipe. Respect for tradition and the strength of the brand, have over time built something unrepeatable, still unique in the world.
The origins of Bitter Campari lie in Novara, where the young Gaspare Campari in 1860 invented a new liqueur called “Rosa Campari “and in the following years perfected the recipe, which has remained unchanged ever since. In the late 1860s, Gaspare and his family moved to Milan and managed to obtain a license to open a café in the heart of the city, in the prestigious Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which was named Caffé Campari. In the back store Gaspare Campari set up a laboratory in which he created his elixirs (including Bitter all’uso d’Hollanda and Cordiale), creating a new type of liqueur. The real revolution and insight was to offer bitters before lunch and not after, as a digestif, creating a new fashion and going on to establish the ritual of the aperitif.
Just over forty years later, under the leadership of his son Davide Campari, the first production plant was opened in Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) and the company began exporting its products abroad. This was the beginning of an unstoppable success that has made Campari one of the world’s best-known alcoholic aperitifs.
